Hello Kitty Island Adventure offers a variety of characters to engage with. You’ll encounter some characters early in the game, but you won’t be able to fully befriend them right away. Tophat is one such character, making occasional appearances before disappearing again.
This guide will show you how to unlock and befriend Tophat in Hello Kitty Island Adventure. It will also detail the necessary quests to complete before you can have a full conversation with Tophat. Notably, you’ll unlock Tophat alongside Big Challenges, allowing you to shower both characters with gifts.
Where to Find Tophat
Unlocking Tophat requires significantly more game progress, so this isn’t early-game content. Many of the quests can take some time to finish, so don’t rush—enjoy the journey until the unlock quest becomes available!
To unlock Tophat (and Big Challenges), you need to complete the quest titled A Challenging Rescue. Below are the requirements for this quest.
After finishing all the necessary quests, head to the Icy Peak entrance located at the upper right of Gemstone Mountain. Tophat will be waiting there for you.
This quest involves Hello Kitty, My Melody, Keroppi, Badtz-maru, and Chococat. If they’re busy, you’ll need to complete their current tasks first. At TheGamer, we found all the characters preoccupied, so we had to tidy up everything else before Tophat would acknowledge us.
Once you finish A Challenging Rescue, Tophat will remain at the Seaside Resort on the beach. As with other characters, check the map for his icon if he’s ever not in his usual place.
How to Complete a Challenging Rescue
A Challenging Rescue starts off straightforwardly but includes some lore shared by Kiki and Lala. Without giving too much away, you’ll find out more about Tophat’s background.
Following the conversations, make your way through the Icy Peak entrance and begin your ascent. The climbing paths will be easily identifiable as they have small rocks protruding.
During the climb, you’ll need to time your movements with the wind. When the wind blows, you can’t climb. This is visually indicated on-screen, and there will also be a green icon under the map if the wind is too strong.
If you attempt to climb while the wind is active, you’ll fall and lose all your stamina. It’s crucial to wait for the wind to stop before you start climbing to maximize your climbing time.
As you reach certain platforms, you will see Tophat and some characters waiting. Talk to them and continue climbing. You might notice various openings leading into the mountain, but taking those paths is optional; you need to stick to the outer ledges to reach the summit.
At the peak, look for a fast-travel mailbox for future access. After interacting with Tophat, you’ll try using your pickaxe to free Big Challenges from the ice, but this method fails. Fortunately, Kiki and Lala will step in to assist! After some more dialogue, the quest will conclude! Both Tophat and Big Challenges will be waiting for you on the beach at the Seaside Resort.
Even though Kiki and Lala accompany you during this quest, they won’t be unlocked yet. For now, they act as guides and will vanish after the quest.
Gifts to Give Tophat
If a gift has at least one of these tags, it will earn one heart. You can also give him two or three-heart gifts, which are listed below:

In exchange for your gifts, Tophat will reward you with Glitches. These can be used to create holograms, power crystal statues, and gifts he enjoys.
What should you give to strengthen your friendship with Tophat? We suggest starting with gifts tagged as Fancy, as this is the most common of the three. At TheGamer, we found success with Candied Banana Coffee.
Other Fancy gifts include area-specific gift boxes, Spinip Alfredo Pizza, and Red Bow Apple Pie. Once you reach friendship level 13 with Chococat, you can craft the Computer, which is a two-heart gift for Tophat.
If you have enough Blank Books, you can craft Glitchy Books, which only require a blank book and one Glitch. You’ll unlock the recipe for this after reaching level two friendship with Tophat, and it’s fairly inexpensive to make.
Friendship Rewards
Tophat has fewer friendship levels, with a maximum of just ten. Below are the rewards you can earn at each level.
The Pickup Glitch grants you a ten percent chance to collect two items when picking something up.
Quests from Tophat
Tophat doesn’t have any one-time quests that unlock with increased friendship. It’s essential to know that there are quests related to Tophat, but they aren’t tied to friendship levels. For instance, Island Champions is a quest given by Tophat, but it requires you to complete A Challenging Rescue and A Long Awaited Introduction (which unlocks Wish Me Mell).
Below are the three daily quests associated with Tophat. Daily quests are randomized, so it’s not guaranteed you’ll encounter a Tophat quest each day.
