If you’re struggling to get into the groove of today’s Connections puzzle, don’t worry! There are strategies and clues that can help guide you. This puzzle seems challenging, not in the usual way, but rather more subtly. I’m not entirely sure why that is, but I hope to pinpoint it as I continue this write-up. Regardless of the challenge level, there are plenty of tips, tricks, and hints to assist you in finding a solution.
For those who prefer a word-building puzzle instead of connecting them, you might want to try the New York Times’ Spelling Bee. It’s a different type of challenge, and unlike Connections, you can make as many wrong guesses as you like until the day is over. The letters provided give you a variety of word-building options, though the central letter does limit your choices to some extent. No matter how many words you manage to guess, you’ll surely enjoy the experience.
Today’s Connections Category Hints
January 30 #599
Today, I found it slightly easier to differentiate the categories, but it largely depends on the order in which you encounter the words. Associating words in a different way can lead to confusion and some incorrect guesses. However, with a few hints, you’ll likely complete this puzzle in no time.
- One category relates to something you can sense but can’t physically touch.
- Another category includes four items typically found at a specific type of gathering.
- One category describes a term used for when a situation becomes so engrossing you can’t look away.
- Lastly, there’s a category featuring four words that share a common starting segment, linked by their location.
Today, I felt that categorizing the words was somewhat simpler. However, the way you initially see the words definitely influences how easy or challenging it will be for you. A word’s initial association can easily lead to distractions, causing you to make a few incorrect picks. But remember, the right hints can help you tackle this puzzle efficiently.

Yellow Answers: Revealed & Explained
- INTANGIBLE QUALITY
- AIR
- AURA
- HALO
- VIBE
This category could be tricky, as “HALO” might also connect with “WINGS” and “HARP” in different contexts. Seeing that first association can mislead you and lead to a few wrong guesses. Recognizing how to distinguish them after making that connection can be quite challenging. This experience highlights a common struggle with Connections; once you make one assumption, it can be difficult to pivot to a different one.
Green Answers: Revealed & Explained
- GAME DAY FARE
- BEER
- DIP
- PIZZA
- WINGS
I figured out this category fairly quickly and actually guessed it first. I wasn’t specifically thinking about game day snacks, but these items are all food typically served when friends gather for a casual occasion. However, with “WINGS” in the mix, if you made a different connection earlier, you might find it challenging to come up with this group. It really depends on the initial associations made.
Blue Answers: Revealed & Explained
- KEEP GOING ON ABOUT, WITH "ON"
- DWELL
- HARP
- INSIST
- LINGER
I hope you tackle this category only after figuring out one of the others because if “HARP” remains an option, it feels a bit easier to identify this group. The phrase “with ‘on’” adds a layer of intrigue, but honestly, I think these words could generally convey similar meanings regardless. It would be fascinating to know the thought process behind the specifics of each category.
Purple Answers: Revealed & Explained
- STARTING WITH EUROPEAN CAPITALS
- BERNIE
- PARISH
- RIGATONI
- ROMEO
Although figuring this group out from the outset was quite tricky, it’s notable that they’re the only set of words with proper capitalization. Despite that, “RIGATONI” could feasibly fit into other categories, making it a little easier for you to guess without eliminating all other options initially. Interestingly, I learned that Bern is indeed a capital!
