As you explore the world of Where Winds Meet, you’ll face many tough battles, especially against bosses. These fights are some of the most exciting parts of the game because they introduce new attack patterns and dodge strategies, making each encounter unique.
Zheng E is one such boss you’ll confront during a campaign mission that involves resolving a grain shortage. This boss not only looks impressive but also uses a variety of challenging attacks, especially in the second phase.
Zheng E’s Boss Fight Location
You can find Zheng E’s boss fight in the southern part of Kaifeng, right after you unlock that area in the main story. Once the map segment is revealed, the boss is easy to spot on the right side when you zoom in fully. Approaching this area will trigger the quest automatically, starting with a conversation involving a mother, a child, and a soldier. After some dialogue, you’ll enter the granary where Zheng E awaits.
Inside, you’ll first face a mini-boss called Li Shoujie. Once you realize the soldiers inside are hostile, you’ll need to find your way through the granary. During this part of the quest, you’ll enter a blue zone filled with large blue flowers. Shooting these flowers with flame arrows will open your path forward. To save an NPC, you’ll need to remove three of these flowers, including one on the back of the branch where he’s held captive. Freeing the NPC will then lead you into the final battle against Zheng E.
How To Beat Zheng E
The fight with Zheng E has some unique mechanics, especially since he can parry your attacks often, particularly in the first phase. He has quick, aggressive moves, and you’ll need good timing to dodge them effectively.
Phase One
The initial phase is relatively straightforward. Most attacks can be deflected if you block at the right moment. Zheng E often swings his fan or swords close to him in quick sequences—two or five hits—and after these attacks, he causes ice veins to appear on the ground. Watching the ground carefully will give clues on where these will form. Deflecting or sidestepping these ice formations reduces your damage and allows you to get in some counterattacks.
If Zheng E parries your attack, he’s likely to step back and launch ranged assaults, throwing two ice waves followed by a dash toward you. These attacks can be deflected, though some horizontal ice waves can be tricky. Sidestepping or dodging is often easier and safer, especially when incoming projectiles appear. During this phase, Zheng E also throws ice shards, which are easier to deflect. Every hit you land on Zheng E builds up an immobilize bar—filling it stuns him temporarily, making him vulnerable.
He also uses a red attack that can be stopped with the Meridian Touch ability or deflected if timed correctly, draining his Qi. The best time to attack is just after his melee sequences, especially when he finishes his five-hit combo and pauses.
Phase Two
The second phase begins once you deplete Zheng E’s first health bar. He will start with a dominant attack, climbing onto a platform with ice veins that surround the area. He then launches two unavoidable yellow attacks, followed by a red attack that can be reflected back to him, breaking his platform.
In this phase, Zheng E gains new moves, many of which are yellow attacks that cannot be dodged. He may dash toward you immediately after his hand glows yellow. If caught during a dash, he will slam you into the ground, causing significant damage.
A good approach here is to prepare for most attacks by dodging unless you’re confident it’s not a yellow move. Zheng E will also perform attacks where he flies around and hurls ice waves, finishing with a dash at your location—a move you should sidestep to conserve stamina. He will also create an ice vein platform like in the first phase and hurl spears from it. These can be avoided easily by moving in one direction; dashing isn’t recommended here because you’ll need stamina to react to his subsequent yellow attacks.
