The blue Axolotl in Minecraft is one of the rarest aquatic creatures you’ll find. It takes a lot of patience to get one to spawn. These mobs are inspired by Water-type Mudkip from Pokémon and make excellent companions because they attack most dangerous underwater mobs.
By gathering a group of them, Axolotls can be very helpful for your adventures. They can support you during raids on Ocean Monuments or protect your base from Drowned mobs. The chance of a blue Axolotl spawning naturally when breeding is very low—about 1 in 1200 tries, or roughly 0.083%. This makes finding a blue Axolotl a very slow and frustrating process.
Since they are so rare, there are more effective ways to get a blue Axolotl. While this involves using cheats, it can make things much easier. This method works for both the Java and Bedrock versions of Minecraft.
Note: Turning on cheat commands will disable achievements on both PC and consoles.
Where to Find Axolotls in Minecraft
They only spawn in lush cave biomes. These biomes are found underground, usually beneath areas with high humidity like Dark Forests, Jungles, Old Growth Taigas, and Wooded Badlands. Axolotls spawn in water above clay blocks within these caves. They tend to attack fish, squid, Drowned, and Guardians, which makes them great for underwater explorations and fights. They also passively give players a Regeneration effect.
Tip: Look for Azalea trees in these biomes. Their presence indicates that a lush cave is somewhere below the surface.
Axolotls naturally come in four colors: pink, brown, gold, and cyan. The blue Axolotl doesn’t spawn naturally in any world and can only appear as a result of breeding two of the other types. Its blue mutation is purely cosmetic, meaning it behaves the same as others with no different stats.
To find Axolotls, visiting these caves is the best method. Both Java and Bedrock editions also allow you to spawn a blue Axolotl using commands.
How to Spawn a Blue Axolotl
In Minecraft Java Edition:
You can enable cheats when creating your world or turn them on in game settings if you’ve already started. To spawn a blue Axolotl, open the chat console using the / key and type:/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:4}
Keep in mind, the Axolotl might not spawn exactly in front of you—look around with the camera if needed.
In Minecraft Bedrock Edition:
Open chat, enter commands, and type:/summon axolotl ~ ~ ~ minecraft:entity_born
Soon after, a rare blue Axolotl should appear. Remember, Axolotls need water; they won’t last longer than five minutes on land, so spawn them near a body of water.
How to Breed Blue Axolotls
For players who don’t want to use cheats:
You can breed Axolotls naturally to get a blue one. To do this, you need at least two Axolotls (any colors). Use a water bucket to tame an Axolotl by clicking on it. Once tamed, you can breed two Axolotls by feeding them a bucket of tropical fish—make sure it’s a bucket, not just a fish! Set up a breeding area near a tropical fish supply, like a Mangrove Swamp.
The baby Axolotl will usually inherit the color of one parent. However, there’s a small chance (1 in 1200) that it will be blue. This means you might have to breed Axolotls many times before a blue one appears. Once you get a blue Axolotl, breeding it with others increases your chances of more blue offspring.
Tip: Catch an Axolotl by using a water bucket; this tames it and prevents it from despawning if you release it.
