While Ghost of Yotei is a direct follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, it has some features that set it apart. One of the biggest differences is the presence of companions you meet during the game. Most of the time, Atsu explores Yotei’s beautiful Ezo alone, but certain events will give her a partner who often fights alongside her.
Warning: Minor spoilers for Ghost of Yotei.
The game’s companions aren’t your typical allies. You have limited control over when they join you, and their appearances are mainly determined by the game itself. There are also several characters who act as loosely defined companions, and these will be discussed below.
How to Get the Wolf Companion in Ghost of Yotei
Look for Wolf Dens
The main companion in the game is a wolf on a mission to fight the Yotei Six. Saito’s soldiers are trying to kill the local wolf population to tame Ezo, but in the process, the wolf recruits Atsu for help. To start your bond with the wolf, you need to find a Wolf Den. There are 10 dens scattered across Yotei’s map.
The easiest one to reach when you first start playing is the Great Mountain Wolf Den, located west of Yotei’s Shadow Inn in the Yotei Grasslands. When you talk to local NPCs in different areas, they’ll eventually mention seeing or hearing wolves, which helps mark the location on your map. When you arrive at a Wolf Den, a quest begins: follow the wolf to other nearby dens, defeat enemies, and free any cages in the camp.
Finishing a Wolf Den unlocks a new skill tree, which you progress through by completing more dens. You can’t make the wolf a permanent sidekick, but you will unlock a song to summon it in certain places. The wolf can show up randomly during gameplay, and completing more dens makes it appear more often.
Main Characters Who Are Regular Story Companions
Oyuki & Jubei
These two characters play important roles in the story. I’ll avoid spoilers here, but just know that Oyuki is first met in Teshio Ridge during your hunt for the Kitsune, a member of the Yotei Six. Jubei is encountered in Ishikari Plain while breaking the Oni’s curse.
Like the wolf, these characters are not always with you. They show up only during specific missions and help in combat by drawing enemy attention or killing foes. They’re also useful for stealth, helping you quietly take out enemies along with Atsu.
Can You Recruit a Bear or Other NPCs?
The Wolf Pack and Other Characters
Beyond the main companions, the game features a variety of other characters who assist Atsu, often called the Wolf Pack. One of the most fun is a bear named Shino. You can befriend him in Tokachi Range at the Prospector’s Camp, located along the Nupur River just outside Serpent’s Pass. The map in the game shows the exact location.
You meet a man who keeps Shino as a pet, and a short quest begins after talking to him. Finish the quest and then feed Shino fish from a nearby basket—do this twice. After feeding him, follow Shino, as he will lead you to a Weapon Kit called Toku’s Untamed Loyalty. It’s unclear if further interactions with Shino are possible; he appeared to fight alongside a wolf once but then disappeared. If you have more insights, feel free to share.
There are also other characters who appear during camp visits, like trainers and merchants. These aren’t true companions, but they can come to camp and sometimes help during quests if they have upgrades or items for sale.
In summary, Atsu mostly explores Ezo alone, but the game introduces some companions that add variety and help out in different ways.
