BELT |
BLOW |
SLUG |
SOCK |
When I reached this category, I recognized it immediately, mainly due to the word “BELT.” It’s not a term I’d typically associate with a “punch,” although I know it can refer to punishment. I find the two actions quite different; a punch is a specific arm movement, while using a belt implies the use of an object. The other three words, however, fit well together and make sense within this category.

WEDGE |
The first words I spotted here were “WEDGE” and “SQUEEZE,” which helped me find the others quickly. Connecting the last two words took a bit more thought, but nothing that couldn’t be resolved. Both “SHOEHORN” and “SANDWICH” logically fit into this category. I noticed that “WRAP” could easily lead someone to categorize it with “SANDWICH” and “WEDGE,” but I managed not to fall for that trick in this instance.

I ran into difficulties with this category while solving the puzzle. Often, I would think of the obvious approach of grouping all the animals together, only to be let down. Surprisingly, today, that would have been the right choice! I was instead attempting to connect all the “racing” related words, and sports trivia typically trips me up, just like it did on previous days. This time, however, my limited sports knowledge actually hindered me more than it helped.

This category was quite the challenge! While trying to sort through the other categories, I found myself thinking, “If only it were spelled Indie.” It’s funny to look back on that moment. Similarly, “METTLE” made me a bit frustrated because I perceive the double “TT” differently than a single “T” phonetically, but that’s probably just how I pronounce things and probably doesn’t reflect how others view it. It’s a quirk of mine that likely doesn’t assist my performance in Connections.
