In the enchanting yet perilous world of Avalon, you find yourself immersed in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. Your journey begins in the Island Asylum and continues as you establish yourself in the keep, encountering spells and hearing haunting stories of curses along the way.

One notable character is Berach, a man with aspirations of becoming a knight. Unfortunately, he’s been cursed and now lies trapped under a bridge, with dire consequences should he attempt to leave—if he can leave at all. Regardless, he needs a compassionate individual to help him break free from his predicament.

How to Complete Age of Excuses

You can find Berach under a damaged section of the bridge, located directly northwest of the Archspire fast travel point in the Horns of the South. He offers the Age of Excuses side quest.

Talk to him to learn about the curse cast upon him, and you can agree to help, thus starting the quest. First, return to the Horns of the South Keep. Go to the room on the left side of Fearghas’ work area and speak with the local healer, Jann.

Jann will provide a new dialogue option related to the Age of Excuses and give you a hint about your next steps. You’ll then need to find a hermit named Drest, who can be found on the beach just below the keep.

If you speak with Keeper Dan, you can start the miscellaneous quest Investigate the Shore, which will direct you to Drest’s location and reward you with some experience points for completing it.

From the village behind the keep, head south to the southwestern corner of the map and follow the shoreline eastward past some ruined structures. You will find Drest in an alcove below the keep.

Discuss the curse with him, and he’ll provide you with the recipe for a Disgusting Health Potion to give to Berach. This potion can be crafted at an Alchemy Table using five Sage, two Whiskey, and one Grindylow Claw.

Material

How to Obtain

Whiskey x2

Found randomly in crates, barrels, and sacks at various locations, including the Horns of the South Keep.

Sage x5

Gather from Sage plants found near cliffs, trees, pathways, and bridges. Also available for purchase from Jann Hepler at the Horn of the South.

Grindylow Claw x1

Defeat any Grindylow and loot its body. Two Grindylows are typically found near the fast travel point outside the Archspire, and one occasionally spawns near the Hunter’s Lodge, north of the keep.

If you explore the partially submerged ruins around Drest, you can find two lockpick-able chests, one containing the Cascade Surge bow.

Once you’ve crafted the Disgusting Health Potion, return to Berach and discuss the curse with him. You’ll have two dialogue choices: you can either perform the ritual using the potion or tell him that the curse doesn’t exist.

  • Choosing to claim there’s no curse will infuriate Berach, culminating in a fight that ends with his death. This results in the failure of the side quest. He only drops basic loot typical of a sword-wielding outlaw, making it unwise to kill him.
conduct the ritual, and Berach will express his gratitude. Completing the quest rewards you with 300 experience points, an extra 150 experience points, and a Soulstone. This special amulet, when fully charged by defeating enemies, has the power to completely restore both your health and mana.
