In The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, you’ll encounter a variety of engaging quests that hark back to the charm of classic games. Some missions, like hunting for oversized potatoes or the iconic “rats in the basement” with a twist, are particularly memorable.
One standout quest in the game revolves around an entire village that has become invisible. As you explore, you might expect to find familiar crowds of NPCs, only to discover this village empty, or so it seems. The twist involves a mischievous mage who has experimented a bit too much with his spells.
How to Begin the Zero Visibility Quest
To kick off the Zero Visibility quest, head to Aleswell and speak with Diram Serethi.
Be prepared to face invisible foes, so using spells like Detect Life will be beneficial. They won’t be entirely invisible—this spell creates a faint outline of them.
Where to Locate Aleswell
Travel to Aleswell, situated north-northwest of the Imperial City. If you follow the road west from the Imperial City, then head north and finally east, you’ll arrive at the village. Once there, enter the Aleswell Inn, located to the south of the village.
Inside the inn, you’ll meet an invisible NPC named Diram Serethi. He will explain that everyone in the village has become invisible due to a wizard named Ancotar.
How to Complete the Zero Visibility Quest
Diram will ask you to find Ancotar in the ruins of Fort Caractacus. The fort is located south of the village, down the hill, and is likely home to a few invisible leveled enemies.
Where to Find Ancotar
Once you’ve cleared the fort of enemies, it’s time to speak with Ancotar. He, too, will be invisible, but you’ll hear him yelling at you to leave while walking around the ruins. Typically, he can be found on the second or third floor, so watch for his outline.
You can also cast Detect Life spells to help locate him.
Approach him, and he’ll inquire about your presence. Inform him about the Invisibility Spell and its impact on the town. He’ll then provide you with a scroll that can reverse the invisibility. Your next step is to return to Aleswell and cast the spell scroll in the center of the village.
To successfully cast the spell and affect everyone in the village, you must do it in the center of the farm, which is in the heart of town. If you miscast it, you can ask Ancotar for another scroll, but he won’t part with additional scrolls if you fail again.
Once you cast the scroll in the right spot, the invisibility over the villagers will vanish. However, be aware that the scroll will also reduce your Luck attribute by 50 points, which can be restored with Restore Luck potions or spells. Alternatively, you can visit any chapel to recover your luck by interacting with the altars.
How to Obtain Ancotar’s Ring of Protection
If you’d prefer not to have your luck diminished, you can obtain another item from Ancotar. If you’re a Mages Guild member, you gain an additional dialogue option, allowing you to say, ‘Not at all. Tell me more.‘ when he discusses the spell. Additionally, raising his disposition above 70 will work as well.
By choosing the right dialogue option or improving his disposition, Ancotar will provide you with a ring. When you ask him about the Reverse Invisibility Spell, he’ll give you Ancotar’s Ring of Protection. Equip this ring while casting the spell scroll to shield yourself from its adverse effects on your luck.
How to Secure a Free Room in Aleswell Inn
After reversing the invisibility, return to the Aleswell Inn and chat with Diram Serethi, who will be visible now. He’ll express gratitude for your assistance. You can then inquire about accommodations, and he’ll offer you a room for free for the entirety of the game.
The room isn’t lavish, furnished only with a bedroll and a dresser, but it’s free. You can store items inside the dresser, making it a convenient early home for new characters.
