With the introduction of Fabled in Autumn 2025, Disney Lorcana implemented set rotation in its Core Constructed format. This system, common in many trading card games (TCGs), brings significant changes to Lorcana’s gameplay and its competitive scene, and some players might find it unfamiliar.
To avoid using illegal cards in your deck, it’s important to know which sets are permitted and when rotations will take place.
What Is Lorcana’s Set Rotation?
Set rotation involves the removal of older sets from the Core Constructed format. Every Autumn, coinciding with the release of the third set of the year, the four oldest sets will be discarded, making them no longer playable. This means that each year, you must take four sets out of your decks to keep up with the current rotation.
There are several reasons why set rotation is used in TCGs:
- It maintains game balance by phasing out older cards and design flaws over time.
- It makes it easier for new players to get started without needing cards from discontinued sets.
- Some may view it as a way to encourage purchases of new cards rather than sticking with outdated decks.
Using Older Cards
The good news is that rotating out doesn’t mean your older cards lose all their value.
If a card has been reprinted in a more recent set, you can still use any version of that card, including ones from earlier collections. For instance, Stitch, Rock Star was initially released in The First Chapter and later reprinted in Fabled. Even though The First Chapter will be out of rotation, Stitch, Rock Star can still be played.
Another option is the Infinite format, which is a non-rotating format. This allows you to play any card ever printed for Lorcana, as long as they aren’t banned. The Infinite format offers more powerful strategies, letting you keep using your favorite cards even if they’ve been rotated out of Core Constructed.
Every Set Rotating in Core Constructed
Each year, the four oldest sets will rotate out. This means a set can remain legal in Core Constructed for between 15 months and two years.
