Hideki Kamiya is a well-known Japanese game developer famous for creating games like Devil May Cry, Okami, and Bayonetta. He has a strong history of launching successful game series.
Kamiya recently discussed leaving Capcom in 2006 and the challenge his former coworker, Hideaki Itsuno, faced in continuing the Devil May Cry series.
Itsuno became involved during the development of Devil May Cry 2, which did not do well for Capcom. However, with more experience, Itsuno was able to create Devil May Cry 3, a game that set new standards for action games.
Competition Inspires Innovation
In a recent YouTube Q&A, Kamiya was asked about Itsuno. He explained that, although they didn’t work together much at Capcom, Itsuno often looked for Kamiya’s advice while making Devil May Cry 3.
“Since I wasn’t the director, I could say whatever I wanted without any real responsibility,” Kamiya mentioned. “Itsuno told me, ‘only Kamiya can get away with stuff like that. If we do the same, fans would get mad.’
Kamiya understood that after the disappointment of Devil May Cry 2, Itsuno had to be very careful in his work to not upset the fans again.
However, when Devil May Cry 3 became a huge success, it motivated Kamiya. While working on Okami, his colleague Shinji Mikami encouraged him to play Devil May Cry 3, calling it “wild.”
“When I saw it, I thought ‘damn, this is awesome,’ it really fired me up,” Kamiya said. “I was like, ‘there’s no way I’m losing to that,’ it really sparked my competitive spirit.”
When Devil May Cry 4 was launched, the team behind Bayonetta was eager to top Capcom’s action series. “If Itsuno hadn’t created DMC3 and DMC4, there would have been no Bayonetta,” Kamiya said, expressing gratitude for Itsuno’s influence.
Kamiya is currently working on a sequel to Okami, while Itsuno has recently left Capcom after directing Dragon’s Dogma 2.
