Baldur’s Gate 3 has a lot of content, but not everything planned for the companions made it into the final release. Some scenes were cut due to time limits or because the character arcs changed. This means there are unused conversations still stored in the game’s files that players usually can’t access.
One notable scene involves Astarion, which was only available during early access. At that time, if you weren’t playing as Astarion, you would experience an event during a long rest where he wakes up from a nightmare. This was a chance to discuss the nightmare with him and learn about Cazador.
This Baldur’s Gate 3 Player Restored An Astarion Scene That Was Exclusive To Early Access
This scene has been restored by a Nexus Mods user named HyperspaceTowel. You can download it for yourself if you’re on PC, as it doesn’t seem to be available on console yet.
After installing the mod, you can trigger the conversation during a long rest at the camp from the first area of the game, provided you’ve interacted with the Dream Guardian at least once.
However, as HyperspaceTowel points out, some dialogue may refer to parts of the story that are no longer included in the game. For example, Astarion’s comments about the dreams imply that everyone was experiencing various nightmares. In the final version of the game, all party members have similar dreams where the Dream Guardian encourages them to explore their illithid powers.
What remains consistent is Astarion’s eagerness to explore these powers. In the final game, this is shown by his willingness to trust the Dream Guardian and absorb more illithid tadpoles to become stronger. The other characters, however, are not as enthusiastic and need more persuasion.
This scene is much better than another unused Astarion scene that was found, where he is seen killing Shadowheart after she catches him preparing to feed on her. The context of this scene is unclear, but it likely would have made him less popular with players.
