The recent Google December 2025 core update has concluded, prompting analysis of its impact. Several prominent news publishers experienced noticeable declines in their search visibility following this update.
Will Flannigan, Senior SEO Editor at The Wall Street Journal, highlighted on LinkedIn that India-based news outlets saw significant drops in U.S. search rankings, supported by visibility data from Sistrix. A chart illustrating this change was shared, showing the extent of the decline among these publishers.
However, the issues weren’t limited to Indian publishers alone. Glenn Gabe pointed out that this broad core update generated considerable volatility among news organizations worldwide. He noted that many publishers, including several large ones in the United States, experienced sharp drops or surges in their rankings. Back in December 19th, he detailed these observations on X, describing ongoing fluctuations across various surfaces like Discover, Google News, Top Stories, and the News tab within Search.
Gabe provided multiple charts depicting the substantial increases and decreases faced by different news outlets. Despite these fluctuations, it remains uncertain whether these publishers will recover in the coming weeks as the search landscape continues to stabilize.
Discussions around these changes have been ongoing within the industry on professional forums and social platforms dedicated to SEO insights.
