ChatGPT’s co-editor feature, known as Canvas, is already a great asset for coding and editing. Now, OpenAI is enhancing this functionality by integrating o1, its cutting-edge reasoning model.
ChatGPT’s Advanced Reasoning Model Arrives in Canvas
OpenAI has launched an exciting update for Canvas mode in ChatGPT, allowing users to utilize o1, the company’s most sophisticated reasoning large language model (LLM). As noted in OpenAI’s post on X, you can now select “o1” from the model picker and use the toolbox icon or the ‘/canvas’ command to make the most of this integration.
Currently, the Canvas feature with o1 is available exclusively to Pro, Plus, and Team users, with plans to extend access to Enterprise and Edu accounts in just a few weeks, according to OpenAI.
This update is fantastic news for developers. Code generation was already a primary function of ChatGPT’s Canvas mode. Designed to facilitate “projects that require editing and revisions,” as detailed in OpenAI’s October 2024 announcement, Canvas mode allows for easy production, review, debugging, direct adjustments, and commentary on your code. Combining this with an advanced reasoning model like o1 significantly enhances the tool’s capabilities.
Seeing Is Believing
Along with integrating the o1 model, OpenAI is also enhancing Canvas with rendering capabilities. Users can now preview their code as they create it—specifically for HTML and React code.
This real-time writing and rendering feature will definitely save users a lot of time and make the platform more attractive. Previously, the absence of rendering was a reason some users favored Claude over ChatGPT Canvas for coding assistance.
In contrast to the o1 integration, the new rendering feature for React and HTML is accessible to all users, including those on the Free tier—not just Pro, Plus, and Team accounts.
While some users are still looking forward to additional programming languages in Canvas, this recent advancement marks a significant step forward for ChatGPT’s co-editing capabilities. Furthermore, it’s a timely enhancement for OpenAI, especially as the Chinese-developed AI model DeepSeek climbs to the top of free app rankings. Nevertheless, this announcement isn’t just a response to competition; these updates are genuinely designed to alleviate many issues that arise during code writing and debugging.
