In a recent update, technology media outlet The Verge reported that Microsoft has postponed the release of its Windows 11 “Recall” feature, originally slated for October, to December. The company stated that it needs additional time to refine the feature to ensure a safe and reliable experience for users.
Brandon LeBlanc, a senior product manager for Windows, explained in an interview with The Verge, “We are committed to delivering a safe and trustworthy experience with Recall. To ensure we convey these critical updates effectively, we will take more time to perfect the feature before demonstrating it to Windows Insiders.”
Initially, Microsoft planned to launch the Recall AI function back in June. However, due to security concerns, the release was pushed back to October. With this latest delay, Microsoft now aims to invite members of the Windows Insider program to preview the feature in December, specifically on AI-enabled Windows 11 PCs.
Recall utilizes a built-in local AI model within Windows 11, allowing users to capture snapshots of nearly everything they see or do on their computers. Users will have access to an interactive timeline to revisit specific activities from particular dates, with Microsoft hoping that these improvements will enhance the overall user experience.
As Microsoft continues to develop the Recall feature, it faces challenges related to security and user experience. While the delay may disappoint some users, the company underscores the importance of safety and user choice, aiming to provide a better product experience.
